I have read the press releases and news articles regarding NOM-029 and I'm very concerned. It seems that this regulation will cause real problems for Baja's economy when it takes full effect. The commercial fishery will collapse, the tourism industry will disappear, and Baja will be badly hurt. If you don't believe me, see what has happened in other places where longline fishing goes unchecked. Baja's economy doesn't have the diversity to survive a collapse in our greatest natural resource: the Mar de Cortes.
Please make sure the "Trojan Horse" provisions in NOM-029, placed there by the commercial fishing industry, are removed before this regulation goes into effect. I especially request that you use your office to review these 3 areas:
1) lack of by-catch provisions,
2) massive reduction in current protected zones, and
3) longline fishing under current shark permits.
Thank you,
